So I have decided to make Body Pump a M, W, F 5:30 am regular class. Did I mention after my first class I had to use my left hand to help my right hand put a drink to my mouth. I am hoping that after this mornings class that will not occur again.. Kristi I am getting better at the push-ups (or at least faking them better). I do notice that my right arm and right leg feel the pain more after the workout then my L side (lifting a bar with the same amount of weight on each side), which is kind of odd as I am right hand dominant...any ideas as to why??? Heading home for a few minutes to check the fridge before group meeting tonight. I might buy more stuff for summer rolls (like spring rolls only not fried). Have a good week everyone.

Yay, the holiday is over!

I don't mean to sound like a ba-humbug, but I'm looking forward to my schedule going back to "normal". It was a tough week keeping on track -with having company in town and no regimented work schedule. I'm a creature of structure, so holidays always throw me out of whack. But thankfully I was able to get my workouts in and pretty much stuck to my nutritional goals. Overall, I'm calling this long weekend a success! Yesterday my daughter even commented that I was beginning to look slimmer (such a sweetheart!). I wasn't quite sure I agreed with her, as I have a much more critical eye... but I stepped on the scale and was delighted... and even more delighted when I put a shirt on that was much too tight before starting this challenge... I was able to wear it without looking like I shouldn't be wearing it! In fact I've lost a couple inches off my waist and 7 pounds off the scale. I'm ready to bring on Week 4! Tonight I have a personal training session with Kristi...so excited, seriously! Later on this evening I will meet up with the other participants to go grocery shopping. Yeup, we will be meeting a nutritionist at a local grocery store to learn how to better shop. This is something I've really been looking forward to! Tell you all about it later. Have a Heart Healthy Day!

Post Turkey Day Workout

Got the post turkey day workout in today. I really didn't want to go, but then a very good friend came by and picked me up. After the workout, I felt amazing! I was even happier, considering I had a few extra bites on Thanksgiving....but I didn't completely stray from my plan. Now off to watch the game!

Making Good Food Choices

This past week has probably been one of my best so far. I've been mostly healthy and the workouts have been vigorous, but I always feel really proud of myself for having completed them! What I'm most proud of this week have been some of my food choices.

1. Sonic. I love it there. If it's happy hour, my car automatically wants to go there. The other day, we were out of the house for several hours and we needed to eat. We went to Sonic. I had a coupon for a free sandwich that I wanted to use for myself but then I saw they had the Brown Bag Special. Two burgers, two fries, and two drinks. I couldn't eat all that food myself but I could take some of it home, right? I could share that with my kids! Instead, I used my coupon and got a grilled chicken breast sandwich with no mayo on a wheat bun. You know what? I was completely satisfied with that.

2. The movies. Last night I went to see New Moon. I knew my friend would probably have popcorn or some other treat so I wanted to have something to munch on instead. I went over to Target to see what I could sneak in the theater. While I was there I was thinking..."it's Thanksgiving weekend, I can splurge a bit!" But I kept reading all the labels and it was scaring me back to better choices. In the end, I bought a bag of caramel corn rice cakes. I also bought a tub of chocolate dipped pretzel rods. They were individually wrapped so I took one in for me and one in for my friend. I had instant portion control with my "splurge". I was feeling pretty impressed with myself.

3. Thanksgiving morning. Here it is, Thanksgiving morning. My family tradition growing up was that we would eat pumpkin pie for breakfast. We would make pumpkin pie special just for breakfast and then have more with our meal. This year, I made a decision not to have pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. My husband prefers fruit pies (I can easily avoid those...not my favorite) so I bought him his own mini peach pie. My compromise is a recipe I learned at Weight Watchers.

Pumpkin Spice Cookies (or muffins)

1 Spice Cake mix
1 small can of pumpkin

Mix together. Drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet or into muffin tins. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 min (cookies) 15-20 min (muffins).*

*The times really depend on how big your cookies or muffins are. Just watch them--or you can start to smell the deliciousness when they are done.

This recipe is low in calories so I can eat several cookies to make up for missing out on one piece of pumpkin pie (which would have most likely turned into one whole pumpkin pie).

Before vs. After Thanksgiving...

I have been trying to figure out what great words of wisdom I have for myself or the rest of you to try and stay focused for the holidays. Then someone sent me this today and I thought how perfect it was in relation to how I want to feel going into Thanksgiving....and truly how I don't want to feel after the long weekend. Hope everyone can view this video.

Wishing everyone the best of luck through the weekend. Looking forward again to the group meeting on Monday.

Holiday workouts

This is going to be another rough week at the gym. I am heading out of town today so when I get back I will really have to kick it in gear. I am trying to stay focused, which with everyday life can be challenging. I am going to try to avoid all the stuff I usually pile on at Thanksgiving dinner. Did I say Thankgiving is my favorite holiday. I did notice on Monday that I was able to do the eliptical for 5 straight minutes without it killing me. Little steps.... Everyone have a great Thanksgiving and of yeah, GO HUSKERS!!!!

Thanksgiving Dinner for Carolee...

I thought I'd blog a bit today about my upcoming Thanksgiving meal. Recently at work we had a Fit for Work session on our favorite holiday foods. I was completely shocked to find out that in a typical Thanksgiving day, your consumption of calories can easily hit 4500! I decided to plan my meal out more methodically this year. I would hate to to sabotage the last 2 1/2 weeks worth of hard work towards healthier nutrition.

Here's my menu:
Turkey Breast, Roasted 6 oz. (no skin) (240 calories; 2g fat; 0 carbs)
Gravy with meat drippings 1/4 c (100 calories; 4g fat; 18 carbs)
Fruited Jell-O Salad (sugar free) 1/4 c (47 calories; 0g fat; 10 carbs)
Dinner Roll, Small Brown & Serve (84 calories; 2g fat; 14 carbs)
Light Margarine, 1 TBS (50 calories; 6g fat; 0 carbs)
Vegetable Relishes, Mixed Raw 1/4 c (25 calories; 0g fat; 5 carbs)
Mashed Sweet Potatoes, with Milk 1/4 c (130 calories; 0g fat; 30 carbs)
Green Bean Casserole 1/4 c (60 calories; 3g fat; 9 carbs)

Total Meal: 736 calories; 17g fat; 86 carbs

How's your menu going to look?

Here's some other favorites you may want to think about before eating...
(*nutrition facts are approximate, may vary by recipe/brand*)

Ham, spiral cut 6 oz. (410 cal; 23g fat; 0 carbs)
Prime Rib, 6 oz. (612 cal; 47g fat; 0 carbs)
Bread Stuffing 1/4 c (180 cal; 9g fat; 11 carbs)
Mashed Potatoes with milk and butter 1/4 c (120 cal; 5g fat; 18 carbs)
French Onion Dip 2 TBS (60 cal; 5g fat; 3 carbs)
Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls (110 cal; 6g fat; 11 carbs)
Pumpkin Pie, 1/8 pie, 4.8 oz (340 cal; 15g fat; 46 carbs)
Pecan Pie, 1/6 of 8" Pie, 4 oz (452 cal; 21g fat; 65 carbs)
Puppy Chow/Muddy Buddies 1/2 c (220 cal; 9g fat; 30 carbs)
Potato Chips, 11 chips (160 cal; 10g fat; 14 carbs)

Here's a few great tips from one of LifePointe's Registered Dietitians:

For starters, don't skip breakfast and lunch, "saving space" for the big meal. It won't work. If you eat healthfully throughout the day, the food will be digested by dinnertime anyway. Also, if you hit the dinner table starving, you'll be much more prone to eat fast and eat too much. The body can only process so much food at a time and what it can't use, it just stores as fat.

Next, when you're ready for that second plateful, hold off for 10 minutes. That first plate is still making its way into your stomach. It may seem like you have more room, but you probably don't.

When you're filling up your plate, dish on the veggies first. You know how it is—the first things always get the hardy-spoonful treatment while the last foods get shoved between the turkey and the yams. Make the majority of your plate healthful. Finally, no rolls. You just don't need them. Thanksgiving meals are loaded with complex carbs. Losing the bread is an easy way to take off at least one hundred calories.

From me to you... Have a Heart Healthy Thanksgiving!

2nd Workout for the day is done!

So this morning I hit up the cardio and weights at L.P. It felt good to workout on my own, with the voices in my head driving me to pedal faster on the bike. This evening I went and tried the Zumba class at Lifepointe. I'm not quite sure what I think about this class...or should I say...about me taking this class. There once was a time when I thought I could carry somewhat of a beat, but put that beat to music with those charming Latin arm and leg movements....and I was completely lost! I did work up a great sweat and I loved the salsa and reggaeton music...but I'm thinking I need some one on one dance instructions before attempting to put it all together in Zumba. I have to say though, I kept a smile on my face and a few giggles escaped me. Having fun and being able to laugh at myself made it all worth it! Tomorrow morning -Body Combat at Lifepointe, 5:30 a.m. Hope to see you there!
Oh, tonight is girls night with my little lady...our dinner menu consisted of salmon and Jasmine rice. It was a complete hit! I'm hoping the healthy food choices are starting to wear down the youngest appetite in the house. *Smile*
I fell off the wagon last week so to speak. I gave myself a day off on Thurseday as I had been to the gym the rest of the week. I set my alarm for Friday and it didn't go off until 5:45. And even though I had to use my left hand to help my right hand lift a jug of H2O (the triceps were worked), I was looking forward to body pump class on Friday. I had the grandson Fri eve and all weekend and he was a little fussy. I am headed back to the gym and should be there in about an hour. All I can do is forgive myself and pick it back up. See you at the gym (anyone).

Sherri is striving to do better!

Hello Everyone,

I'm back on track today! This morning "Millie and me did a 60 minute power walk". It was a great way to start the day! I missed two days of working out this weekend Friday and Sunday. I planned for Friday to be a rest day but I had every intention of getting to spin class Sunday. Instead I was babysitting my nephew. Saturday I got my reps in on the weight machines, did some cardio with Alicia then after did a little work out in the therapy pool. It was very nice in that pool! After that I hung out in the sauna and the whirlpool. I left LP feeling like a wet noodle with very little motivation to do much of anything. Later on in the evening I had an opportunity to tailgate under the 10th Street bridge. Being one of the only sober people made this first time experience quite interesting. I probably would have had a lot more fun if I had a few of the cold ones everyone around me was sucking down but i didn't want to undo all my hard work from earlier in the day. (How about them Husker??!!) BIG 12 here they come!! ;-)

This week will be a true test for most of us I'm sure. My biggest challenge will be getting in the proper exercise. I will be leaving for STL tomorrow and will return Friday evening. That will give me at least part of the weekend to make up for what I may miss. I'm taking my dog with me to make sure I have a reason to walk while I'm away. Something is better than nothing.

There is a newsletter I follow at this link: http://fitnesslincoln.com/. One of this week's newsletters gives 5 great ideas for staying on track during the holidays. Check it out! If you are anything like me, any ideas I can get is a plus!

I hope everyone has a wonderful, heart healthy Thanksgiving!

Here's to our health!!

A great Strong-End to my Week!

So I was determined to make this last weekend not turn into a Weak-End. I'm so happy to report that it was in fact a Strong-End to my week! Friday I skipped my strength training, but it was much earned. Saturday I made it to a Body Combat class...I highly recommend this class for those wanting an intense cardio/strength workout. For my evening treat, I enjoyed a nice meal with my family and a bone chilling Scottish Ale form Lazlo's. Oh, it tasted so wonderful! I think even more delicious because I had truly earned it. Yum! The rest of the evening I enjoyed watching the game with my family at a local sports bar. While all the beer specials seemed tempting, I opted to pound the Ice Water w/Lemon. Funny thing, I didn't even miss the beer. Sunday I spent the day shopping for the last minute Christmas gifts on my list, which left me spent for the evening...in more than one way. I decided to take the opportunity to enjoy a restful evening with the family. This morning when the alarm clock went off at 5:AM, I didn't even hesitate to get out of bed and head to the gym. It was great! I was actually excited to go workout! Tonight I'll be heading back to the gym to try the Zumba class. I hear it is a good sweat, and a good way to learn a few more dance moves. Have a Heart Healthy Day! Remember, it's just one choice at a time...You can do it!

I had a great workout this am...7:30am to be exact on a Saturday...who would've thunk! I tried an early morning with Tracy at LP. I was so worried that I would over sleep...I barely slept! But it was great. I liked how we broke up the work out with walk/runs then lunges then side lunges. We learned new strength training exercises that I could do at home on my days off. (I can now do the "Plank" for at least 30 secs. One thing I did relise today was....it's hard to keep focus when you are laughing! Tracy is a great trainer and so caring! I hate to brag...but I think I hit the jackpot on the trainers! MY TRAINER ROCKS! She calls me if I slack off, and she showed me how to keep track of my heart rate, taught me new exercises...she's introduced me to new healthy snacks to try, given me great low-calorie recipes, called me if I slacked off, meets me outside of the gym for scary night walks, called me if I slacked off....either they are really paying her well, or (sniff, sniff) She actually cares about my health! Oh, did i mention that she calls me!? Any-hoos, thanks American Heart Association...for making a difference and introducing me to a great new influence in my life..Tracy! AND I'VE FINALLY LOST 5 LBS! Yeah

Feeling better

Week 2 has come and gone so quickly. The group workout on Monday was so much fun. I have to admit, I was skeptical because I had no idea what to expect, what we were going to do and it was great!! It really was a good chance to continue to get to know each other and support each other - thanks Anna for being my Rob and making me RUN that last lap of the track!! We have a great group of ladies and I am so fortunate to be on the same team as all of you!!

I was up the next morning meeting Rob at 5:00 A.M. It was a good workout, but morning workouts are tough for me. They mess with me the whole day. We are going to switch to evening workouts - right after work - I seem to handle those better. Rob and I had 2 great workouts this week together and Friday was the first day since we started that I really felt good and energized. Rob really pushes me more than I would push myself without pushing me further than I am capable. He encourages me to do those additional 2-3 reps and tells me good job and that really does help when I am sweating and can barely breathe. I can tell a difference with each workout. Now I just need to do better getting my cardio in.

Week 3 is beginning and it seems to be going by fast. Hope to see some of you this next week at LP.

Body Combat!

So today I took the Body Combat class at L.P. It was so intense! I had a bit of trouble getting all the steps down, but Jesse, the instructor, was mega patient and encouraging. I'll definitely go back to this class. I'm thinking about Tuesday morning at 5:30 a.m. Come on and join me! Now it's off for a little shopping and getting ready to watch the game. After sweating it up in that class, I'll be sure to enjoy a beverage or two for the game, but not too many! That was HARD WORK!!! Have an amazing day!

Weekend...NOT...WEAKend!!!

So I've figured out where my weakness is at...the WEAKend. But I am determined not to let this one get by like ones in the past. You know, the weekends where there is no workout, no cardio, bad food choices, and over indulgence in tailgating beverages. The weekends where your so full of guilt that you throw in the towel...because why bother, you already did the damage. NO WAY! Not Again! Sure, I'm taking another day off from strength training today, but I'm listening to my body and it's telling me that's a good idea -and that I earned it! But not to fear, I'll be sure to get my cardio in tonight. Here's a little tip I just learned, "make sure not to go more than 48 hours between your cardio workouts" -you begin to lose the benefits of the workouts if you do. So here's the plan, tonight my family and I will join hundrededs of screaming teens, and adults (me), for the much anticipated release of New Moon. However, if you caught the news this week, you learned the same thing I did...that on average a medium sized bag of MOVIE POPCORN contains 60 GRAMS OF SATURATED FAT! Well, happy about it or not, my family will not be having that tonight! Instead we will make sure to munch our apples down before the show, make it through the movie without a sugar/fat overload, and get out in time for a healthy dinner. As for the rest of the weekend, you'll just have to check back...I'm going to make the blog site my accountability for the weekend. Really hard to give in when I know many will be anxious to see how I do. Here's to a Heart Healthy Day! Take Care

A Little Bra Talk

At our group meeting I mentioned my super-bra and a couple of you were interested in finding out more information. I shall not disappoint! You see, I'm a connoisseur of bras. With ample bosoms, such as mine, I need to be. I search far and wide for the best and when I find what works for me, I stick with it!

Last month I was fitted for a bra at a sewing expo I attended. You'll need to go and read that post. I'll wait for you to come back. Ready? See? I have no shame.

Here is the sports bra that I love. Oprah was the first person to tell me about it. I bought mine online. But, I was chatting with a friend that just started her own bra lady business here in town (after reading my post about the company that did my fitting) and she does fittings for THIS EXACT SAME BRA! It's also cheaper than the one I purchased years ago. I have a feeling that once a few more weeks have passed I'll need to get a new size and I know exactly where to get one, now!

If you want a special fitting, or order one...here is her contact information (posted with permission).
Wilma Gerena nebralady@gmail.com
Open house Fri Nov 20th from 7-9pm and Sat Nov 21st from 9am-12pm. Email for directions or to set up your own private fitting.

Missed Workout....

On Wednesday I was supposed to go to my first Zumba class with Anna. Didn't get to leave work till after 5 so missed it. Sorry Anna!!! There is one tonight so plan on going to that. It is amazing how bummed I was because I missed working out one day. I truly look forward to the workouts. Did take the ab and buns class with Anna on Tuesday.

I soooo enjoyed seeing everyone again on Monday. Now I feel I know faces and names much better and will look for everyone when I work out. Sorry you morning people...won't see me there.

Hang in there everyone.

Ohhh, I am feeling it now

Today started off good but way earlier then what I am used to. Got up for the 5:30-6:30 (yes AM) Body Pump class. I am definitely not at the same level as the morning group pro's, but did not feel pressured to keep the same pace. Lunges, squats and of course my nemisis, the dreaded push up, plus abs arms and stretching. I was just sitting here thinking, is that pleurisy acting up?...then I remebered all the stretching and abd work from this week so far. I have made it to LP three times already this week (that is a big jump for me). Tuesday I did laps and then the Aqua Jump Start class (6:00-6:45 AM) which was good. My only problem (besides getting out of bed) seems to be managing the distance and time with my home constraints. I am usually at work by 7:00 am, but since I decided it is easier to do AM's instead of trying to figure out if my daughter works (I watch my grandson), I now have to manage doing the class, getting showered and ready for work and back home by 7:15 so my son can drop me off at work and then borrow my car to get himself to work. Seems like life has gotten way too complicated. I am just glad I made it one more day to becoming more healthy and hope I will continue after this 12 week program! See you at LP

Carolee's been a busy lady...

Well, it's been quite the few days for me. Sunday I stayed away from the gym, only to rake leaves for 3 1/2 hours...I think my neighbors should buy me the next set of leaf bags, if ya know what I mean ;-) Monday I met with 8 of the ladies in our BetterU Group for education and working out. Let me tell you what -I felt our quick intense workout on Tuesday morning...oooh, it hurt so good! Tuesday evening was another adventure with cardio and some weights -to end with the lovely treat of good stretching. This morning I met my trainer Kristi and fellow participant Janet, for L.P.'s BodyPump class. I really enjoyed this class, despite my obvious confusion on finding some of the correct form positions...but Carla, the instructor, was great! She was very positive and upbeat. I'll definitely be back to that class! Tonight I'm going back to L.P., but it will be for the much deserved dip in the whirlpool and detox in the sauna! Have a Heart Healthy Day!

We are family...I've got all my sisters and me..

Like the other ladies, I felt it was good to get connected with my Fellow Flab Warriors last night. Our core group met at Lifepointe for some clarification and goals. We all participated in a cardio/and weights class, finishing the workout focusing on our abs and stretching. I have to tell you...it wasn't as bad as when my trainer pushes me:)...it's all gooooooddd!

After the work out...We took a group photo together...it'll be interesting to see how much we all change in appearance in February, 2010! I can honestly say, I thought this would be more of a competitive race to health...but it turns out to be a sisterhood instead! All of these women deserve a healthy change in their lives so they can go on and accomplish great goals in life! This group could be every ones & any ones; mother, sister, best friend, co-worker, etc. I'm so proud to be a part of this dynamic group. If you are just following along this blog...get ready to send in your essay for next year. Definitely worth it! I feel better, more in tune with my day. I'm not as crabby and sluggish after work. I can really see how, even the short distance I have come, this program has set a path to change my health for the better. YOU ARE WORTH IT TOO! No one can make the decision for you. Start now! Start small, Start Big....Just get going!!!!!:)

Sherri was present tonight!

Hey Ladies,

What a great night, huh?  It was so nice to see everyone again.  The first night we met was such a whirlwind it was hard to keep all the names and faces straight but I think I’ve got you all pegged now.  Except for Anna that is…  You look like the Zumba instructor!  ;-)

Gotta get my butt to bed now.  I’ve got an early date with “Millie”!

Good night all!

Here’s to our health!

Beer Bellies Aren't Just for Men Anymore

Yes it is true, women can have a beer belly. We contribute it however to having kids, busy schedules, genetics, etc, etc. I know many of you enjoy a cocktail every once in a while and even if it isn't beer it will still go strait to the tummy. Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram which compares to 9 in fat, 4 both in protein and carbs. Below is a list of common alcohol beverages and the hefty calories they carry.
4 oz Wine: 80 calories
10 oz Long Island Iced Tea: 580 calories
12 oz Pina Colada: 655 calories
12 oz Beer: 145 calories
4 oz Martini: 275 calories
12 oz Margarita: 750 calories
12 oz Daiquiri: 675 calories
10 oz Fuzzy Navel: 445 calories
1.5 oz of Tequila, Rum, Vodka or Gin: 100 calories
For others it it soda. Most of you soda drinkers prefer the "diesel" rather than "unleaded" variety. Research is divided on whether diet sodas are healthy but there is no dispute that the extra calories and sugar in regular soda negatively impacts your health and weight. I would prefer that none of you consume more than 40 grams added sugar per day. One 12oz can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar. That is 10 sugar cubes. Can you even imagine sitting down for an afternoon break and eating 10 sugar cubes!? Is it time for you to rethink that drink?

Judy says "WOW!"ladies

I am finally getting into this blog thing. I guess I'm probably the last one to actually get going on it. You ladies are all doing so well with diet and exercise. A big "way to go" to all of you.
I enjoyed meeting with Katie and learning about how to better deal with high cholesterol.
She presented the information in an easy to follow and understand way with not too much overload. Being a teacher, I really appreciated her teaching techniques.
It sounds like everyone is off to a terrific start ... we should feel proud!
Judy

Not so bad, Not so good...

Well, I had some challenges with sticking to my goals this weekend. I've found out that my weekends are really my "weak-ends". I won't bore you with the details, but the food and alcohol was a fail. I should have read Sherri's comment to me earlier, about it being "mind over matter". But I say, Move On! So I am. Tonight I am very excited to meet back up with the other ladies in our group and have a heart pounding workout at LP! Have a great Monday!

Sherri’s weekend wrap up

Good Evening Everyone!

The first week is down and I have to admit it has been one of the busiest weeks I’ve had in long time.  Fitting in an hour or two of exercise a day has been a challenge because I find something else gets sacrificed.  The last couple of weekends have been spent playing catch up and I’m still behind!  It’s all good though.  Friday was suppose to be my day of rest from working out but I woke up around 5:15 for some strange reason and couldn’t get back to sleep so I took advantage of “Millie” the treadmill in my basement for an hour.  Millie sure seems to be happy getting all the attention she has been getting lately.  It’s good for me because I get a head start on the laundry at the same time.  There’s nothing like multi-tasking!

I’m very proud of the food choices I have been making.  It seems every time I head out to LP I end up stopping buy Super Saver to stock up on  produce and eggs.  I’ve been doing breakfast everyday and I like it!  In case any of you are interested I found a good recipe for breakfast sausage here:   http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Breakfast-Sausage/Detail.aspx  Instead of using ground pork I substitute it for ground turkey breast.  It tastes is great!  I may even experiment with different spices to change things up a bit.   If you try this recipe may want to use a drop or two of olive oil in your pan to keep it from sticking.

Saturday ended up being my day of rest because I woke up with a sore throat and had no energy.  It was good to rest and spend the day with my daughter working on her class project and giving Rico, my puppy some love.

Today, I did a half hour on the treadmill.  It would have been an hour but it occurred to me I had a date with Sarah at LP.  I knew I was going to be “working it” for sure so I opted to stop at 30 minutes.   Sarah and I got our workout on with free weights,  crunches, lunges, push ups and then headed to Spin class!  Lori was there.  (It was so good to see your face Lori.)  I find I push myself harder in that class than I would if I were just riding the bike by myself.  It’s great.  Afterward, I did the usual… off Super Saver to stock up on some of the basics to get me through the week.  The apples and pears are delicious this time of year and I love apples and pears!

Tomorrow will be the start of week two!  We are supposed to meet at LP tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.  I was told to wear workout clothes.  Sounds like they expect us to get our sweat on.  I look forward to seeing everyone.  Until then, good night!

Here’s to our health!

SMONI

Ps. Everyone is doing a great job!  I am so proud to be part of this and to be participating with such strong women.

New Week

I actually exercised 4 times this past week - twice with Rob and twice on my own doing cardio. That is 4 times more than I have exercised in the last 6 months TOTAL. It was great getting some ideas from Katie on my eating habits. I have some really bad habits to break but I know I can do it. She also told me to celebrate my successes rather than beat myself up when I slip - as I know I will slip. I actually took the last 3 days to rest - I was completely beat on Friday and on Saturday, I was so sore, it was hard to walk up and down the stairs. Today I felt better physically and had to bowl tonight on league. I felt pretty good bowling - I work up a sweat there as there is only 2 people on a team - so no time to sit for long between turns. I didn't feel as winded as I have in the past, so I guess my workouts are showing something already. This past week was hard but I made it and it will get easier each week as I get into a routine of working out. So I am looking forward to beginning week 2!!! Keep up the good work everybody!! I love reading everyone's blog - we are all going through the same thing and it helps to know the support is out there!! Have a good week!

Anna's keeping the faith

It's been a pretty motivating week for me...I've been faithfully making it to the gym at least 4 times. The spin classes really pushes me but I feel not to bad later! I recommend the Zumba classes at 5:30 on Monday, and Wednesday..really fun! I can't believe the HIGH I get on the way home...feels like I could go on to do activities all night! My trainer is fabulous...we've even met outside the gym...going for walks and strength training using my whole body. Tracy showed me how to use a chair and walls to push my muscles..quote" You should be able to hold your own body weight and use it as a training tool" I like that because even if I don't make it to the gym, I can still keep fit at home. Yesterday, I didn't go to one morning Abs class as I've been fighting a sore throat, so I did sleep in for once! (I never sleep past 8am with kids and all I have to do) I'm also a late night owl so I think I was burning the candle at both ends and it finally caught up with me. However this am (Sunday) I was getting ready to go walk the dog and commit to my 1 hour walk...nice surprise...my hubby joined me for a crisp fall walk! We got back in time to go to church with the kids at 10:30 am. After church we went to Grandmother's restaurant to have that awesome Buffet they serve...Oh, wow, I love all the selections. My hubby was good about helping me make good choices...I didn't go back for seconds...even though the chicken enchiladas were calling my name. I'm really not missing all the sugar that I usually put in my coffee. 1 half pack of Equal seems to be sweet enough for me now. I feel really great today! My clothes feel more loose then usual...trying to stay off the scale and base my progress more on my stamina and well feeling! I appreciate all everyone has done for us ladies! this is a fun, great program! I'm proud of all the ladies participating! YOU ROCK!

Challenges on the Road

I've been in Chicago since Wednesday. Let me tell you, it is tough being good on the road! I made a short video blog entry explaining how my week has gone.

6 pounds down, how many more to go?

Omg all, I have lost 6 pounds since the first weigh in! I have cut my calorie intake to 1800 a day and have been walking everyday! It is much easier for me to get the prepackaged meals to keep track of my calories. If I have a question about a food I look it up on the Internet. My kids have been really supportive and say all the time how proud they are of me. A few months ago I wouldn't even have been able to walk from my car to my apartment door, but now I can walk around the block several times. I took my daughter with me the other day walking and she actually asked me to slow down! I love it! I've been to LP 2 times this week, was planning on going Tuesday but was on TV instead!! You could be next! They want to hear all about us doing our thing! Good luck all and have a good week. Hugs, Michelle

Good Week

This first week has gone by fast. I made it to LP four times this week. I took an abs class that my trainer, Sarah, teaches. Tough class but made it through. Thought my stomach would be really sore the next day but I was pleasantly surprised. Wednesday I did my assessment and got set up on the weights. The weights are soooo nice to work with. I love that it tells me all my settings. I am not a morning person so have been doing all my workouts when I get off of work.

I also met with Katie on nutrition. She gave me things to work on. I knew some of my weaknesses before (like sunflower seeds) and I was already addressing some of them. I also have big issues with alcohol. She gave me a goal of only drinking 2 beers all night at card club on Friday. I had only 3 so was still happy with myself.

My biggest success this week was my blood pressure. I have been taking it 3-4 times everyday at random times. My bottom number has been below 100 every time which is a huge deal for me. I can't believe that a week and a half of exercise can make such a difference.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again Monday.

This has been a long, but definitely a fast week. So far I have made it to LP twice. First day with my health coach was good. She has me doing interval training and I know she had me do the elliptical just because I said I hate it. I did a whole two minutes, whining the whole time of course. The next two days I felt like I had lifted an elephant with my legs...going down the steps, oh what fun! And mind you, I did not even lift any leg weights! Kristi would be happy that the next time I worked out with interval stuff, I put myself on the elliptical and did two minutes the first round and 5 minutes the second time. Yippee! I was going to try to get up and swim this am before work, but 0430 came and went. I have at least used our gym equipment here at work twice this week, but alas I went to Vals with a friend last night. We shall see what the weekend brings. Lori and Anna were talking about a spinning class on Sunday so maybe...

Learning all about food and choices...

I've started the nutritional aspect of my healthier lifestyle changes. It's amazing how much I've learned within just a few pages of reading! I had no idea that 2% milk contained 5 grams of fat per cup. I will definitely be switching back to Skim! I also learned that your margarine selection should be picky, like making sure the first ingredient is water, that it is a soft or liquid form and made from canola or soybean oil. I've touched on lean meats, starches and sugars as well. I can't believe just how much paying attention to ingredients and labels impacts one's nutritional health. Just because something looks healthy, or contains the label "0 Trans Fat", doesn't mean it's necessarily the best for you. I'm very excited to continue learning about healthier food choices and how to prepare them. Side Note: Lunch today was a success! We had a celebration luncheon for a completed project, catered with pizza and bread sticks (both favorites of mine). However, I do know there is some simple rules for loosing weight (which is a goal of mine): 1. Fewer calories in 2. More calories out. Today I prepared in advance and had a delicious salad loaded with veggies, YUM! Here's to making small, and big, changes in my lifestyle! Hope all of you have a Heart Healthy Day! *And I'll be sure to let you know how the tailgating/football watching - munchies/beverages goes on Saturday. I'm confident that I'll make better choices than I did for the last game.*

Off to the gym again!

So I said no to the donut this morning, had a way healthy breakfast and lunch...and then....Banana Splits for my team at work. I had gone into serving them believing that I wouldn't have one, but in the end I did! Good thing I have a personal training session tonight, definitely have to work it off! I've heard the saying "nothing tastes as good as thin feels"...I'm gonna have to keep that in mind for future temptations! Have a great night!

Up and At it Again!

I wasn't planning on working out this morning, as I have a personal training session tonight....but once the alarm went off, I couldn't help it! I woke up feeling motivated... so I got dressed and was on my way to L.P. at 5:30! I was able to hit the bike and weights, doing intervals so my heart rate stayed up. Although it wasn't my full workout, it was a great jump start to my day. It is also helping me make a heart healthy decision by NOT eating one of the donuts a team member brought in today!!!! Instead I'm having some cottage cheese with pomegranates...YUM!

Sherri Did Her Thing Today!

Whewwwwwwwww!  I got up at 4:45 this morning, had a hard boiled egg, oatmeal and half and apple, brushed my teeth and headed to LP.  I slept in my workout gear so I didn’t have to worry about putting that on getting up at the crack of dawn.  I’m so not a morning person.  It was 5:29 and Sarah, bless her heart, was right there waiting for me as I walked through the door.  We did a basic work out that included squats, dumb bells, push ups, those band things, a couple of the weight machines and to finish it off about 30 minutes of the treadmill.  I had a nice sweat going by the time I left LP today!  It was a really nice way to start the day.

Got home took a shower get my daughter up, my dog fed and walked and I will head out the door to begin my work day.  Tomorrow is my day of rest so I’m glad I got today’s work out done early.

I got some good food ideas from Katie yesterday.  She even gave my daughter some ideas to make better choices with the foods she eats.

At this moment I feel like I’m on the right track.  I’m amazed at how good I feel!  Everyone have a great Thursday.  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at Monday’s group meeting!

Here’s to our health!

Feeling tired

I have exercised 3 times this week already and it is only Wed. That feels good but I am really tired. I met with Rob Tues morning at 5:00 a.m. and I found out just how out of shape I am. I also made the mistake of not eating something before going - lesson learned!!! I will be drinking a protein shake next Tues morning. I meet with him again tomorrow night at 6:00 and see what new workout he has for me. Then I meet with Katie to discuss nutrition. I can't wait to see what she has to teach me. This has almost been information overload the last week and a half, but I know I will settle in within a couple of weeks and feel less overwhelmed. I am loving this opportunitiy and all of the support I am receiving from family, friends, co-workers and other BetterU participants. Rob is great too!!!! We really clicked. Diane did a good job matching trainers up with participants, I think!!! Off to bed now - time to snuggle with my dog, watch a little tv and sleep 8 hours!!!

Pomegranates: A New Adventure?

I am truly pleased to get to work with 10 great, inspiring and committed ladies during this BetterU challenge. Nutrition is a key component to maintaining your cardiovascular heath and I am excited to share my knowledge and passion of food with each and every one of you.

What's been on my plate lately? POMEGRANATES!!! When I feel in a “picky” mood or want a busy food to eat in front of the TV I grab a pomegranate.

One entire pomegranate has hundreds of seeds, yet only about 150 calories; plus they are power packed with nutrients and antioxidants. Bargain city! Providing 16% of an adult's daily vitamin C requirement per serving, pomegranates are also a good source of the B vitamin pantothenic acid, potassium and polyphenols.

How to Instructions: Treasure hunt in your pomegranate by splitting the skin with an orange peeler or knife, then use an underwater method to split open your pomegranate and remove all of the beautiful ruby colored seeds. The membrane between the honeycombs of the seeds will float, making this process much easier. Beware that the juice from these berries can stain, thus the underwater treatment can save your laundry from problems too.

The season for Pomegranates generally ends in December, so enjoy a pomegranate on these great fall days!

For some of the best recipes and eating instructions check out this website:
http://www.pomegranates.org/

5:15 a.m. is so early!

However, I'm glad I was up. I would have been mortified if I missed out on meeting my personal trainer for the 6:00 a.m. Aqua class. Have you ever heard someone say, "you can't sweat in water"? Well, let me tell you -that is false! It's been so long since I've been in the water; I'd forgotten just how refreshing it can be. Add some aerobic moves and it becomes energizing. Hmm, Refreshed and Energized...great way to start a day! And after my workout last night in the gym, this is exactly what I needed. Side Note: food choices were very good yesterday...woo hoo! Have a great -Heart Healthy Day!

Sherri says "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked"

Reflection on some of the days events...

Had a good day at work.  I ate good food with the exception of a fun sized Snicker Bar that had been on my desk for a week or so.  Eating it happened so spontaneously and it was gone so fast if I didn't have the empty wrapper I would have denied it ever happened!  I took a nice walk with a co-worker at lunch.  I talked her into walking down to visit my Mom at her job.  It was a nice visit and a great walk.  The weather has been lovely so it's best to take advantage while we can.

With work behind me for the day I picked up my daughter and we headed home.  I didn't make it to LP tonight.  I needed to spend some time with my daughter and my puppy.  The two of them have been really good sports through the change in routines.

Tomorrow I will meet with Katie (the nutritionist) to discuss food choices and such.  I'm so looking forward to it.  So far I have been doing a great job sticking to my commitments, no fried foods and I haven't had a cup of coffee in since last Thursday!  I have a fridge full of produce and I have been eating it!!  I’m sure she will have lost of good information to pass on.

With my Ipod on shuffle Cage the Elephants "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked"starts to play and I began my 60 minute trek on my treadmill...

Finally the count down from 60 to 0 minutes was over!  I had a good 3.5 mile, 350 calorie burning workout tonight.

With my Ipod still on shuffle Mos Def's "Quiet Dog" cooled me down.  (Simmer down, simmer down, simmer down now.  Quiet Dog bite hard!)

Now I'm fresh out the shower, watching the coverage on the execution of that sniper dude...  It's time to get tomorrows grub organized and call it a night.

Here's to our health!

Batter Up!

So this weekend was a pass & fail for me. Friday night I worked out with my personal wellness coach and worked up a great sweat! Thanks, Jillian...I mean, Kristi. It made making good choices on Friday night easy. However, my choices were not so hot on Saturday/Sunday. I skipped the long walk I had planned for Saturday morning. My thought was that walking around the mall all day Christmas shopping was good enough. I have to tell you, not so much! Then came a bit of indulgence on the football/tailgating munchies Saturday...which left me feeling uncomfortable and wishing for less sodium intake. Sunday came and went, it also lacked a work out and good food choices. So, for a moment last night I held a little pity party in my head, and then decided to stop "shoulding" all over myself! Time to just pick right back up again. "I should've" carries too much blame and shame, so no dwelling on the strike out for me! Only looking forward to stepping back up and knocking this challenge out of the park! Here's to having a Heart Healthy Monday!

Lori

Sunday night and finally had time to sign up for the blog. Had an extremely busy week and weekend. Did have time to work out twice with my training, Sarah, this week. Wow, I thought that I was working out before. Not so much. It was a tough 30 minutes each time but truly felt good when it was done. Having someone watching over you really helps push you.

Because of everything I had going on this weekend, I was exposed to great food and drink. I did eat some bad stuff but I also said no several times. Being a social drinker I will have to learn to slow down in that area also. I was able to get out today and take my dog out for a walk. I am anxious to start tomorrow.

Good luck to all.

Sherri and Judy are still among the living!

Good Evening All,

It's been a great weekend over all! Friday was not the best day though. I left work early with a splitting headache and could not get myself into workout mode. Saturday was much better. I woke up early got to the gym did some cardio on the bike and lifted double sets! It was great. I walked out of the gym feeling like I accomplished great things and it wasn't even noon.

Today I bought some workout gear! Hoodies, pants, socks, shoes, the whole nine!! It was a great motivator for today's ever so intimidating workout session. Judy and I attended the 5:00 Spin class. We both lived through it! It wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be. My behind is quite numb, there is still a mild burn in my thighs but I have the energy to finish up the laundry, the dishes and get a head start on dinner for the next couple of days. Overall it was an awesome workout. Judy and I may make it our Sunday ritual to spin at 5:00. It would be awesome if we could fill the class with "Go Red Girls"!

Enough of this practice stuff... I'm looking forward to the "official" start tomorrow!

Ready to go!!!

Last week I was feeling pretty overwhelmed with all of the information I was receiving from the LifePointe staff and my trainer, Rob - whom I click with great!! I just got home from the grocery store and got my HEALTHY food for the week and I have my scheduled appointments with Rob and I am ready to go!! I am so excited to be a part of this inaugral challenge and to have all the tools, information, staff and support right at my fingertips to make sure I don't fail or give up!! I am excited to start learning a new healthy way of life - letting go of my LOVE for fast food and sodas!!! My biggest challenges will be not eating out every day, not drinking soda and drinking water. I am one of these that NEVER drink water. I bought some lemons so I can add a couple of lemon wedges to my water bottle and start learning to love water more than I love Mountain Dew. I meet with the LifePointe dietician on Thurs and can't wait to hear what ideas she has for me. I am meeting Rob for our first appt. on Tues at 5:00 A.M. - yes, that's right - 5:00 A.M. YIKES!!! But I told him I would give early morning workouts a try and see how it goes. I am willing to try anything LP staff want me to try because obviously what I have been doing hasn't been working too well for me. Good luck everyone and hope to see you at LP soon!!!!

FitLinxx

I am such a fan of FitLinxx! HereAlign Left's a picture I took of my personal health coach, Shelley, entering in some information for me.

Having this sort of system is something that really appeals to me. When we went to work on strength training, I liked knowing that all of my settings, reps, and weights will be right there waiting for me at each station. I'm kind of a number junkie, too. So, getting the report after each workout of how many pounds I lifted or how many fitpoints I've earned really motivates me and makes it easier for me to set and meet some goals.

The exercise component has been one that has been somewhat easy to integrate into my life. The time it takes to do it has taken its toll on my house (BetterU participants should get maids, too!), but it has been worth it. The eating is a little more challenging for me. Since I'm using so much extra time at the gym, getting in healthy eating has been difficult. I meet with the dietician on Tuesday so hopefully she'll have some good suggestions.

This next week will be interesting. I'm going on a business trip to Chicago and will be away from home for several days. Eating and exercising while working and living out of a hotel could prove to be quite the challenge. I'm taking my Flip video camera and will be doing some video blogging while I'm there to keep you all posted!

Guilt Free Friday Night for Carolee

Last night was a success! My boyfriends mom is in town and we took her and my daughter on the First Friday Art Walk. It was great fun! Afterwards we went out to eat in the haymarket. Being a bit hungry, all the fried items on the menu looked delicious! I did indulge in some of the appetizer, but at a much smaller portion than I normally would have. Pretty darn proud of myself! But here comes the even more difficult part...the alcohol. I am a social drinker and love to indulge in good beer and wine, most often above the recommended servings. I must say that my Friday night in the haymarket didn't include mass consumption of Scottish Ale... Way to go me!! I did have a delicious glass of wine and about 3/4 of a light beer (gross!). Thus far I have exceeded my goal for alcohol intake! Now for the Husker game... I'll let you know how it goes.

Better U Widget

Have you downloaded the BetterU widget yet? They have options to have it put on your facebook page, desktop, blogger sidebar, etc... I have mine on my iGoogle homepage. It's a great way to have your goals visible!

In other news...I've been out to Lifepoint every day this week!

I am so excited!!

You know I have tried everything to get healthy, for me my problem is my weight. This challenge is going to give me the tools to use to build my new life!! Heart Healthy!! I am so stoked!! I am going to write up a whole bunch of stikies to leave all over the house and keep me excited! Like the look in my husbands eyes when he looks at the new me!! Like the way my kids are going to hug me at the end of these 12 weeks when I am a so much healthier person and I have accomplished the goals I have set. I am so excited!! It was really nice to meet all of the other ladies that are participating in the challenge, you all are very nice people and I look forward to the friendships that we form. My very best wishes to all of you and the best of luck in your personal journeys. Please feel free to call me even late when you need a little umph!, I will be there for all of you even if you just need to talk to someone, I am usually up until 3am so if you find yourself in a place that you really need to talk to someone I am here!! Love and hugs to each of you!!

Just Chill Out, Carolee!

So a big part of my wellness goals over this next 12 weeks is to learn how to relax. I'm one of those that is constantly making a list and checking it twice, trying to maximize the time in my day. But often this leads to unnecessary stress and anxiety, not to mention exhaustion, leading to nothing getting done. So I'm going to learn how to just sit back and not fill all the hours of my day. Last night I opted not to work out; however, my daughter did and put some work in for me, thanks T Bear! Instead of working out I ran a few errands, stopping at one of our favorite stores, Euphoria. This is where I picked up some essential oils, candles and rock salts. With my family we created our very own meditation center in the house. We also turned our bathroom into a mini-spa. So for the evening my daughter and I enjoyed some quite meditation together...well, at least started the learning process of how to meditate...not so easy for us beginners! Afterwards the family all took turns enjoying their very own spa bath with rock salts, oil, candles and the calming sounds of "thunderstorms" on cd. It was a great family night, with many-many benefits. I highly suggest trying this at home. Tonight I will be heading to LP to meet Krisit for a one-on-one. I'm very excited to get back in there and work up a sweat. Have a great day!

Sherri's Success!

Hello Everyone,

It's another late night for me. Finished an hour on the treadmill here at home tonight and I'm stoked! That thing had dust on it an inch thick and cobwebs like you wouldn't believe!

Everything else fell into place today too. Looking forward to another beautiful day to get outside and walk during lunch tomorrow. Peace out ya'll...

Here's to our health,

SMONI

Ps. Going to LP tomorrow around 6:30 pm. If anyone wants to join me give me a call!

Here is a picture of how your body should look like it doing the "plank" properly
Try it! It's great! Anna

Do the "PLANK"!

Last night I rushed from a school Art Club meeting, dropped my girls at home and then drove like crazy to get to Spin class that I swore I would make it to. It was good that I promised my trainer, Tracey that I would make her class....if not held accountable, I may have said "oh, well...next time" I was a few minutes late but no biggie! I jumped on a bike and started pedaling! I actually went 50 minutes! Tracey kept telling me to stay tuned with my body and if I felt over-exerted then slow down. I felt good about using 7-10 on the gears...until I found out that most of the people in the room were at 15!!! Oh, well, have to start some where. It was a good cardio, fun total body work-out with low impact on my joints. Although today, I do hear some screaming from parts of my buns...never knew I had muscles there!

After the Spin class, Tracey took me to the free weight area and showed me some exercises I could do at home. What a great idea! If I can't make it to the gym, I still can tone at home. She showed me how to use my own body as my "weights" to lift. My new favorite move is the "Plank". This is like doing crunches without strain to your neck. Lay prone to the floor, using only your elbow/forearm for support. Now lift your rear off the ground, on your toes and see how long you can hold it! Wow, nice tummy work out! It got me in the lower abdomen as well as under my ribs...two exercises in one. Try it and see if it helps those lax stomach over-hanging your pants. I've had 2 cesareans and other surgery...I need help especially in those areas! I showed my 8th grade Art class my new exercise. They are excited for me!

O.k, now I have to confess... I didn't have dinner and it was a long time since lunch. By the time I got home I was starving! I saw a bag of Sunchips (wholegrain?:) on the counter...so.....unlike one of our previous presidents....I DID INHALE! I had them with some peach salsa.....at least it wasn't dip! Can you guys forgive me? I was better today...had fruit for breakfast and a 'Healthy Choice" lasagnas for lunch. It actually was good and filling! I feel really awake and energized today! PEACE OUT-Anna

Sherri is one tired woman...

Good evening everyone!

Today was a very full day. I worked, I picked up my daughter got her fed and headed off to LP. I met with Sarah to find out just how out of shape I am, set some goals and got a fitness plan in place. I surprised myself with 18 push ups tonight!! Next time I'm going for 20. After leaving LP I had to stop at the grocery store to get eggs to make my daughter's birthday cake. She will be 9 tomorrow! It's bittersweet... I can't believe my baby is growing up so fast and I can't believe I am still carrying that "baby weight" after nearly a decade! Ugh...

Goals set so far:

*Exercise at least an hour for 5 to 6 days a week (Did that really come out of my mouth tonight?)
*Cut back to only 2 cups of coffee a day (I take mine with cream AND sugar.)
*No fried foods (What the woo?? You read right!)

I have plenty to do tomorrow so this will be short and sweet. Good night a ALL!

Here's to our health!!

SMONI

WOW!

I finally figured out how to set up my account and get to this blog. I didn't think I was that old, but this new technology stuff is over my head - I need to be a teenager to understand it!! As I sit here and read everyones comments, I know I am not alone!! I am feeling everything that the rest of you are feeling. I meet with my trainer, Rob, Thurs. and I am really nervous. I am extremely out of shape and I picture him yelling at me like Jillian on Biggest Loser!! I cry easily!! I am so excited to begin this journey and to bring my family and friends along for the ride. I can't wait to see where this journey will take all of us. All of the ladies are so awesome and LifePointe is a fantastic place. Can't wait to meet Rob!! If I don't post again for a few days, someone come looking for me - I may have fallen and can't get up!!! Just kidding - this will be fun and I AM NOT ALONE!!!
Today has been a success! I ate a healthy breakfast, ate a healthy lunch, had a pretty decent dinner...all within appropriate portion sizes. But let me tell you, it was really hard work to do this! I felt my 3:00 craving hit me, thankfully I had some carrots at work. On the drive to the gym I took notice of all my favorite fast food stops...oh my cravings were begging me to pull over...but I didn't let them win this time! I'm so thankful I was smart about preparing for the gym last night and packed a bag (I had my 13 year old daughter pack her gym bag as well). If I wouldn't have gone straight to the gym after work, I fear it would have been a "Fail" for me. So I dropped my pride and joy off at the Y so she could run and lift weights (quite the little athlete she is) and I headed to LifePointe. I walked in and felt no apprehension about getting to work. The staff even greeted me as if I had been there a 100 times before... that gave me even more incentive to work hard. Surprisingly I retained everything I learned from the night before and was able to operate the machines without much difficulty...other than lacking muscle strength that is. A bit of sweat and I left that gym feeling AMAZING!!! I picked up my daughter and asked how her workout was. She said she gave it a 4 on a scale of 1 - 5 and felt really good about getting some exercise in again. Our Wednesday nights are girls nights for us. In the past they've consisted of fast food, movies and lounging... Well, we've put in our work, getting ready to take our dog for a walk, and then it will be lounging time...only this time, it will be well earned! Here's hoping you have a Heart Healthy Day tomorrow.

How do I do this?

Well it is already Wed and as you can see this is my first posting. I first had to figure out how to get started, my kids laugh at that. When I first got the call that I had been chosen, my first thought was Oh, no, what did I get myself into. Then I got excited and motivated and just to keep this up I decided to tell several of my friends so I could not back out. They have been lovingly harrassing me ever since...I already have about 3 hours of scheduled "lunch" workouts everyday. Orientation was great, I met many new firends that have many of the same issues that I have...comforting to know. I met with Kristi last night, no shocks in that room as I knew I was way out of shape! OK, maybe it was really shocking to see how out of shape. I knew I could only do limited number of pushups...even in high school, while on the swim team doing conditioning I could never do push-ups or chin-ups which thankfully I did not have to do last night. I think my junk in the trunk gets me because I start for the ground with my arms, gravity takes over and pulls me the rest of the way and then there is no coming back! Hopefully in the next month I will be able to work my way up to a whole 5 push-ups (still "below average") but hey, I don't have delusions of grandure yet! I'm still trying to get past the a"actual program doesn't begin until Nov 9th" and how many places can I go out to eat before then phase. Well tonight is going to be an early night, last night I finished with Kristi, went grocery shopping, made 6 dozen enchiladas and some salsa for a potluck and finally went to bed about 1 am only to be freezing all night and too tired to turn on my space heater. Needless to say I woke up with a tension headache from the shivering. Can't wait for that metabolism surge that will make me hot all the time. Good luck everyone with beginning our new endeavor! See you at LifePointe!

who'd thunk? I'm on my way!

Hi Healthy Ladies,
I am getting ready to go shortly to meet my trainer (Tracey) at Lifepointe and attempt her "Spinning" class....think I'll sit in the back for the first class. I went in to Lifepointe yesterday evening for my orientation of the gym with Paul. I was like Carolee, as I was almost "sweaty"with dread that I would be so out of shape that Paul would say "Leave, it's hopeless for you!" It wasn't that way at all! Paul was very helpful and asked me questions about my health overall, workout habits (none:() and any joint/body problems we may have to watch or be aware of. He suggested that I try an Olypitical trainer instead of a treadmill due to my bone spur on my right foot. He showed me the really amazing weight machines that store your workout, tell you the settings/weights you had before and add everything up at the end! Wow, how easy is that! I was surprised at how many mature people were working out....40 and above! Man, if they can do it, I should be able to! I wasn't as sore as I thought I would be and had more stamina then I thought. I finished the evening feeling really positive. I really enjoyed the hot whirlpool soak I took just before I left the facilities....when was the last time, I got to soak in a hot bath without someone saying "Mom, I need to get in there!"? Ladies, you know what I'm talking about.

I was home by 9:30 and felt refreshed enough to carry out my chores and still read a book to my 9 year old before she went to sleep. I'm kindof looking forward to trying out those bikes in Spin class tonight. Zumba class looks fun too! I may even learn to like carrots, who knows!

Lunch Time!

Today I am going to walk with a friend to a local food vendor for lunch. This is a vendor I really like, and usually over-indulge on their goodies. However, today I am very proud to say I'll be taking my own lunch with me. Happy Dining!

Big Loser

Last month I heard about the BetterU makeover challenge campaign put on by our local American Heart Association. They were going to pick 10 local women to participate in this challenge. I knew I had to apply. As soon as I got home, I filled out the application and hoped for the best. A couple of weeks ago I got the call! I made it!

Last night was our orientation. I met the other 9 women. We each have our own personal health coach. We met with a cardiologist. We had our blood checked. We got swag!

I really felt like this was as close as I would ever get to being on The Biggest Loser. I have so much support and motivation that I feel like I can't fail. These next 12 weeks are going to be tough but I've never been so excited to be a big loser.

Cross posted at my personal blog.

First Night Down!

Tonight was the night I met with my personal wellness coach, Kristi, one-on-one. It was kind of crazy, on the drive to LifePointe, it was like I had "first-date" jitters! Plenty of mixed emotions on this trip... I let myself go down the negative road for a minute and thought, "I hope I don't kick the bucket on the treadmill tonight"! But as soon as I turned in the parking lot I noticed that LifePointe is also connected with LifePointe Urgent Care...surely they would be able to get me back up and running if I went down! But in all seriousness, Kristi was great! She really made me feel comfortable with her direct-honest-caring approach. We went through my fitness evaluation and learned how all of the machines function and where to find the nearest hand sanitizer pump...no illness is going to stop me! We also talked about short term goals and set up my weekly workout plan. I also learned that there is more than one heated pool in the facility...so those sore muscles will get some well earned TLC! After coming home from my meeting I felt extremely energized, probably too much for my family, but they humored me as usual. I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to heading back to the gym tomorrow and doing a full workout. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes.

Sherri's Got Something To Prove

I have to admit I was shocked to get that phone call letting me know I was chosen to participate in Lincoln's first ever Go Red BetterU Makeover Challenge.

Like so many others I have fallen into a lifestyle of totally bad habits that are leading me down the path to very serious health problems. Like so many others I could come up with all the excuses, everything from I can't afford a membership to a gym, if only I had a trainer to help me, I don't have the time to work out or to prepare the right foods... the list goes on and on. This challenge has addressed almost every excuse I could come up with and put the ball square in my court as if to say "Now what?" Oh I'm sure I could come up with something but the reality is I'm not getting any younger and I'm not going to get any healthier if I do not put forth the effort and make it a priority to take control. This is the time, I need to "just do it'!

I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to prove to myself I can accomplish great things when it comes to my health. I will make the most of the twelve week challenge and I'm positive I will establish new, healthier lifestyle habits to carry on through week thirteen and beyond!

To all the participants, it was so nice to meet everyone. I am rooting for you ALL.

Here's to your health!

Chew the fat with Anna Alcalde

Hi Ladies!
I can't tell you how excited I was to be chosed for the Go Red BetterU Challenge. I thought this will surely help me stay on track....millions of "close friends" keeping me in line and accountable! Ok, no pressure there. Seriously, as I've hit my 40's, those extra 10 pounds keep creeping up to 20 lbs or more! If I don't take charge now with my body....what do I do when it's to late. It's like preventative maintenance on your car....you don't change the oil or get new tires AFTER it's stalled on the highway. I have accepted the challenge. I figure "what do I have to lose...besides unsightly flab!" I think it helps to make yourself a short term goal, such as Feb 11th-the big celebration to go towards in the beginning. How long can 12 weeks really be? I guess I will soon find out! Today went pretty good. I work at a school so the selection isn't always "low carb". The lunch ladies have swore to help me with some adaption though. (thanks Paula and gang) I'm going to Lifepointe tonight to get my orientation and start my work out program. Tomorrow I'm gonna try a Spin (biking) class with my new personal trainer "Tracey"...she seems very pumped for me to succeed and teaches this class. I have a feeling I'll be investing in a bottle of Icy/Hot before the end of the week. Wish me luck...better yet, why don't you join me on the way to a healthier you!??? Take care-Anna!

And so it begins...

Greetings!

A few weeks ago an email was sent out advertising Lincoln’s First Annual Go Red BetterU Makeover Challenge. This challenge called out to women who have a desire to change their lifestyle in order to live a more heart-healthy life. Well, I had been thinking about making a lifestyle change, and this was a real motivator for me. Last week I was notified that out of the 130 applicants, I was one of the 10 women chosen to participate! So I am inviting you to join me on my journey to a Heart Healthy Lifestyle. Over the course of the next 12 weeks I will be working with a wellness coach, along with increasing my daily physical activity, and learning about nutrition. This is a 12 week challenge, kicking off November 9th, with the winner to be announced on February 11, 2010. However, I like to think of it as the first 12 weeks of the rest of my healthy life!

I look forward to your support and encouragement, and hope to provide you with the same.
